The most common adverse effects of levetiracetam treatment include CNS effects such as somnolence, decreased energy, headache, dizziness, mood swings and coordination difficulties. These adverse effects are most pronounced in the first month of therapy. About 4% of patients dropped out of pre-approval clinical trials due to these side effects. [3]
What is the recommended dosage for levetiracetam medication?
Levetiracetam may be used safely (with caution) in children older than five years. The recommended starting dose is 20 mg/kg per day in 2 divided doses. It can be titrated up to 20 mg/kg every two weeks up to a maximum dose of 60 mg/kg daily. Dosage adjustment is generally not needed for hepatic impairment.
Is levetiracetam medication safe for pregnant women?
Do not start or stop taking levetiracetam during pregnancy without your doctor's advice. Having a seizure during pregnancy could harm both the mother and the baby.
